Digital Sound and Audiovisual Archives of NTNU Music, Taiwan

  • The Music Digital Archives Center of National Taiwan Normal University was established in 2004, and so far, the center had collected and digitized thousands of precious sound and audiovisual files in its database, including for example the complete fieldwork recordings taken in 1960s by Profs. Hsu, Tsang-Houei and Shih, Wei-Lian, two of the most distinguish pioneer ethnomusicologists of Taiwan. Besides digitize the historical recodings, MDAC has a recording team lead by a professonal that execute new recording projects as well. The Database Management System of MDAC is developted by the Graduate Institute of Library & Information Studies, NTNU, which is able to design multiple matadatas and is very friendly to system users and end users.

    This paper will discuss the intention and plan of the MDAC, also study the selected historical recordings and the recordings that made in 2007 by MDAC recording team for the "Digital Project for the Violin Collection of Chimei Museum" (part of 2007 National Digital Archives Program, Taiwan). Chimei Museum is the largest private owned museum in Taiwan and has more than 300 violin family instruments collection which is one of the richest private violin collections in the world, including works by almost every great master in violin's manufacturing history.
